  General Notes:

Samuel lived with his father's family in Worcester and Grafton during his boyhood. He left school at the age of 13 or 14, just after entering High School, because according to his own statement, he had no taste for Latin, then a prescribed high school course. He worked with his father in the bakery and fruit and produce businesses, and took over the latter when his father retired. He was forced into bankruptcy in the panic of 1893, when he was unable to make sufficient collections to meet his obligations; he afterward paid off all the debts of the business that were outstanding at the time of his discharge. He then engaged in various lines of work, mainly in the grocery business, until he became incapacitated for regular work in June, 1924. After second marriage lived at 443 Park Avenue, Worcester, and afterward at several addresses in Worcester and Auburn. died at 680 Southbridge Street, Auburn. ⁴

Samuel married Lois Hannah Wheeler, daughter of George Colburn Wheeler and Mary Martin, on 8 August 1875 in Worchester, Massachusetts.⁴ (Lois Hannah Wheeler was born on 2 August 1856 in Berlin, Massachusetts, ⁴ and died on 23 March 1901 in Worchester, Massachusetts, ⁴.)
