General Notes:
In his boyhood he worked at farming and lumbering. In 1848 he went to Worcester, Mass, probably on account of the breakup of the family resulting from the death of his father and stepmother. At the time of his marriage or soon after, John W. was employed as a boot-maker, an occupation that he continued in Grafton during his first residence there, at the time of the Civil War. At the end of the war or about that time, he moved his family back to Worcester and engaged with his brother Lewis, in the baking business. Prior to 1885 the bakery was sold out or discontinued, and he founded the first wholesale fruit and produce business in Worcester, conducted for a considerable period at 151 Front Street. During this period he was interested in politics, was elected councilor or alderman in Worcester for several terms, and served in the state House of Representatives during the sessions of 1888 and 1889. In 1891 he sold out his share in the fruit and produce business to his eldest son, Samuel W., and retired to a farm on the Providence Road in Grafton. when he became too old to continue farm work, he sold the farm and rented a small house nearby, where he lived with his unmarried son Edward until about a year before his death. The remainder of his life was spent at Worcester, where he lived with his eldest son Samuel and the latter's second wife at 443 Park Avenue. Buried with wife, Jane and children Mary and Edward are buried in the Bryant Brigham lot - No. 45, Section 5 - in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Westborough, Mass. 4
