Settled in Portsmouth, where he engaged in business. He held many public positions, was an officer in the colonial militia, Speaker of the House, member of the Council, Judge and chief Justice of the superior Court, though he was not a lawyer. He was usually known as "Colonel". He was married twice, first to Mary Pickering in 1681, and sometime before 1731 to Sara perkins. his first wife evidently died before 1731, but not record has been found.
